Tools / Files and automation

In, out, and on its own.

Files in the formats your scanner and your CAD use, a view that shows you what is really there, and automation for the jobs you do every week. Opening files and looking at them come with every licence, even the free Viewer; scripts, the command port and AI assistants come with the Automation module.

Every licence Automation module

Files

Opens what your scanner writes. Saves what your CAD reads.

Saving and exporting need a licence for any module. The free Viewer opens and shows everything below, but can't save or export.

Open and import

Everything your scanner writes

Open a Tesselform document, or import files into the one you're working on: drag them onto the window, or pick several at once and they are read one after another in the background.

  • Meshes: STL, OBJ, PLY, OFF, glTF and GLB, and 3MF.
  • Point clouds: E57, LAS, LAZ, PTX, PTS, XYZ, ASC and CSV.
  • Exact solids: STEP and IGES, opened into the Design model as exact, editable geometry.
  • A mesh file carries no units, so Tesselform assumes millimetres, or asks each time if you prefer.
  • One fileA .tform document holds the scans, surfaces, sketches, the Design model and its history

Save, Save As

Everything your CAD reads

Save the document as one .tform file, or write another format with Save As:

  • STEP: the Design model as exact solids and surface shells.
  • IGES: as solids, or as trimmed surfaces.
  • DXF: a section at the section plane as lines, arcs, circles, ellipses and splines, or every edge of the model in 3D.
  • Meshes: STL, 3MF, OBJ, PLY and glTF, from a scan or from the Design model.
  • Point clouds: E57, LAS, LAZ, PTX and text, as aligned.

Export Special

Many items, one go

Export every item you tick, each kind in as many formats as you like: meshes as STL, OBJ, PLY, 3MF or glTF; point clouds as PLY, E57, LAS, XYZ, PTS or PTX; sketches as DXF; and surfaces and solids as STEP, IGES, DXF edges or meshes. Name the files after the model tree or as a name and a number, give each format its own folder, and never overwrite a file by accident.

Backups, recovery, undo

Your work, looked after

Tesselform backs the open document up every few minutes, and again just before a job that could run long or short of memory. Backups are incremental, so only what changed is written, and your own file is never touched. If Tesselform stops unexpectedly, it offers your work back when it next starts; if a job stops answering, a box shows its progress and lets you stop it cleanly.

  • Undo goes back as far as you set, up to 200 steps, and a menu takes you back through the last 40 at once.

Options

Make it yours

A dark, warm or light appearance; interface size; colours; mouse and view settings; units; import rules; performance limits; and your own keyboard shortcut on any command. A 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse works without its own software, and supported mesh operations run on the graphics card. Export your settings to a file to take them to another computer.

Search, the guide, Report

Find anything, ask anything

Type the name of a tool, a setting, an item in the model tree or a recent file into the search and go straight to it. F12 opens the built-in guide at the page for the tool in hand. Report writes to our helpdesk from your own email program, with only what you choose to attach: a picture of the Tesselform window, its log, a copy of the document.

Viewing

See what is really there.

Display, shadows, lighting

Five ways to draw it

Shaded; Edges, with every triangle edge on top; Wireframe; Hidden line; and Enhanced, whose stronger shading makes waves, dents and creases easy to see. Shadows follow what you're looking at, so they stay sharp on a close-up, and the light can be moved round and up or down.

Clip, Focus View, Screen Split

Look inside, or at one part

Clip hides one side of a plane you slide through the model. Focus View shows only what you've selected, and brushes then touch nothing else. Screen Split gives you up to four views, each turned and zoomed on its own. Transparency sets how see-through each scan, solid or surface is, to see a Design body inside a scan.

Views, saved views

Come back to it

Frame everything, look square at any side, and keep views to come back to, in this file or in every file. Parallel projection for measuring and lining things up; perspective for looking.

Selection tools

Pick the right triangles

Polygon, lasso, spline, brush, circle, rectangle, angle fill and shape fill, each on its own key, with grow and shrink, through the part or only what you can see, and front faces, back faces or both.

Automation

Do it once. Let it run next time.

The Automation module goes with at least one other module, and comes in the Suite.

Scripts

Python, built in

Tesselform ships with its own Python, so there is nothing to install. The Scripts panel (F9) has an editor, Run and Stop, live output and example scripts. Scripts run in their own process, so a mistake can't take the application down. Run one on the next scan, or batch a whole folder.

Recorder

Do it once

Press Record and Tesselform writes your steps as Python while you work: readable tf.* calls with the values you typed, not screen coordinates, ready to run again or to edit.

Command port

Drive it from your own tools

A local command port lets other programs drive Tesselform. It is a named pipe on this computer only, for your Windows user, and stays off until you tick it in the Scripts panel. It speaks JSON-RPC, with a command-line client and a Python library, for linking Tesselform into your own tools and batch jobs.

AI assistants

Tell it what you want

Tesselform comes with a server for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), so an AI assistant that supports MCP can drive your running copy while you watch: read the model, sketch, pull and round, work on scans, take screenshots and save.

  • It works only on this computer, for your Windows user, and only after you tick Let other programs control Tesselform.
  • It won't overwrite an existing file, or close a document with unsaved work, unless you say so.
  • A read-only mode offers the assistant only the tools that look, never the ones that change.

Hand the dull parts to Python.

Scripts, the recorder, the command port and AI assistants come with the Automation module, on its own or in the Suite.
